Use a passage of at least 500 words and time yourself reading normally, not unusually fast — short samples and forced pace both produce numbers you cannot repeat.
To find your reading speed, divide the number of words you read by the number of minutes it took. Reading 900 words in 4 minutes is 225 words per minute. Adults reading standard prose typically land between 200 and 250 words per minute, and anything sustained above roughly 400 wpm is usually skimming rather than full comprehension.
